I'm Tom Ube and I'm chief executive of garlic garlic is an online identity company so we help individuals look after their personal information in the digital world so today a lot of your information my information everyone else's information is appearing all over the internet in different places uh that we didn't expect sometimes information that we've put there ourselves and what what's happening is that frauders are using
that information to try and steal your and my identity so as service tries to help people look after that information find out where it is who's got it what they're doing with it and how you can prevent yourself from being a victim the Internet isn't something to be totally afraid of and there's a lot of useful things you can do amazing things you can do but you
just have to be safe you know we we this is a new environment if someone tells you to cross the road uh they could explain to you how you're going to be hit by a bus or a car or a lorry or something and by the time they describe all the different ways you could be hit you could stand there and say I'm afraid I'm never going
to cross the road but you need to be able to cross the road all we're saying is that in this environment there are ways to behave there are things you need to know about to be safe in this environment it's a new environment so people have to learn quickly they need to learn that if you put any information on there it's available to to a billion people
around the world and then once you know that you just start to think a bit carefully and say actually I'm not sure I need to put that information I think I'll hold this bit this bit back I don't think schools at the moment have really understood the power of personal information it's very rare that I talk to teachers in schools and they will explain to students about
the fact that information that they put on now is going to be around for the next 10 or 20 years but if you notice with young people they will often create multiple identities so my daughter when she goes onto a new site and she sets up a new site she doesn't use her real name she just thinks up a name and uses that instead so in gen
we're seeing different behavior from different generations and I think that's really interesting the way that uh people who have grown up with the Internet seem to be just much more comfortable about the way they use it the way they talk about themselves creating different personas different identities I see a future where consumers realize that their identities are their most valuable asset out of everything they own their
identities are their most valuable asset and they really start to take control of them and they start to try and wrestle back control from the companies and the governments that are taking over their personal information people who are just beginning to to use the internet um need to have some sort of protection so we designed this service specifically for mainstream consumers
