I'm Kathy Lewis I'm the CEO of desktop Factory desktop Factory concept where we're going to lead the desktop fabrication Revolution what that means is we're going to give people like you and me a chance to build solid objects from our computers from a scanner or from a downloaded website right in our very homes on our own desktop printer the technology we've chosen is very much like a

laser printer because we wanted it to be simple and we needed to make sure that over a course of a few years we could keep pushing the cost down so what happens is there's a reservoir of a consumable it's a nylon based powder inert totally safe we have a roller that picks up a layer of the powder then there's a hallogen lamp that draws the image of

each layer into the powder it moves out of the way the roller drops off the image on a build platform rolls back and starts the process all over again so we literally build the object layer by layer by layer we're not a replicator per se we're more of an engine to create something brand new something you couldn't create any other way while you can replicate I don't

think it'll be the most pronounced use of the technology I think people will want to create something new something they've never been able to have before we're really helping people take an idea whatever that idea happens to be and turn it into atoms turn it into a physical rendition of that idea and we think that it's going to unleash tremendous Innovation all over the world and it'll

allow people that have all these creative energies to actually realize their dreams so anybody can take and form an object make a fun car or a child's uh toy and print it out what I see in the future for 3D printing you almost can't see because the opportunity is so vast and so dramatic but one thing I know for sure is we won't work the way we

do today we'll be able to create a home repair object by downloading it from the web we'll never again have to go to the hardware store at the last minute when something breaks we'll go to a website we'll download the object we'll print it and I think the greatest opportunity is for us to give our children better education around science technology engineering and math and I see

3D playing a major role in that we're not a replicator per se we're more of an engine to create something brand new something you couldn't create any other way while you can replicate I don't

Xavier Faltot

////// Xavier Faltot is a multimedia producer based in Berlin. For more than twenty years he has moved through radio, image and the web as a media mutant: he started out alongside artist Shu Lea Cheang, founded the Parisian web radio Radiomarais and spent some fifteen years running cultural venues such as la Station and le Consulat, blending art, technology, cinema and poetry. A pioneer of creative uses of the web, he now builds images, voices and custom instruments with artificial intelligence, such as TEXT OPERATOR and La Carte des fuites, designed to write Maison Fluid, his treatise on fluid parenting, out on 25 July 2027.
