so I'm Chris Kelly I'm the Chief privacy officer and head of global public policy for Facebook well I I I mean I think that the core of Facebook is that um real life identity and the the way that you want to uh you experience your life and share it with others around you uh I basically oversee all of our efforts on uh privacy controls on um explaining
how we can comply with privacy laws around the world and then I work on other public policy issues as well net neutrality um other important things to the future of the company and the future of the internet you you know we are as individual human beings part of our networks and the people that we're connected to and so you can express yourself to uh to your friends
and receive the expression of your friends um through your uh through your Facebook account through your newsfeed and through you know surfing around and seeing what pictures they upload and and and get a sense of their lives without having to communicate with them in real time without having to have a phone call or or or anything like that so you get this sense that you're much more
connected to your real world Network well obviously the people have a great deal of concern about what's uh going to happen with their personal data when they hand it over when they share with their friends of where it goes where it flows and Facebook has always tried to uh Define that for them and provide them with controls over it well we think that people should be able
to make their own choices about that that if you want to live a more public life that you can do that and if you want to live a more private life you should do that as well um you know obviously there's a a choice at the beginning whether or not you put something up on a site like Facebook or not but Facebook has never thought that privacy
is a binary uh it's not a binary question it's if I put something up I don't necessarily want it to be available to everyone on the internet I may just want it to be available to my friends or very close friends or maybe just for myself um we've provided privacy settings to do that from the beginning and the defaults actually by you know limiting views of profiles
based on networks and based on other control factors means that that you have a you know a sense in which you're you're a member of a particular Community instead of you know just putting some something up like on a Blog on the open internet uh I I see uh I see sort of more and more of the world connected through the internet and through wonderful Technologies and
and I think that that we you know not immediately but but sort of um uh sort of over over time um that we get a much more you know connected and understanding World The Beacon controversy that you heard about which led to a lot of people talking about us selling private data um exactly the opposite is the case we were receiving data we weren't sharing it with
third parties
