yeah my name is John Wood and I'm the campaigns and the New Media officer for the British trade Union Congress which is the one big Federation for trade unions in the UK and my role there um is to uh work on our online Communications and Advising on unions for um for making the most of the internet um we're going to really be able to expand the amount

of work that trade unions can do I think there's a sea change happening now in the way that unions um will start to and voluntary organizations will start to use the internet and it's going to be led um partly by the fact that things are getting so much cheaper um Web 2.0 um Agile development um open source Technologies um permanent beta and um all these kind of

uh Technologies and ethoses uh all contributing to an atmosphere where it's it's easier and cheaper to experiment and participatory internet techniques are going to allow us to empower them a lot more um we're already linking them up together with each other and we can already see there are some attempts going um at General Motors for example there's a group blog for all the different plants of the

um company who come together to uh be able to share knowledge um about what's happening in each other's um countries and share best practice which is actually having a big impact then um on how lots of local unions can come together globally um to uh to to work with a global employer we can make um a global portal out of local experience I do see problems in

the time before we get there though before we get to um uh a world where people are used to uh openness and collaboration um and curent systems we might have a few um a few ways of working that that don't quite like um that idea and I think um uh where as it goes in the workplace um unions going to be uh uh busy um in in

helping to sort over that transition phase from uh our current ways of working to our new ways of working making sure that none of the employers and none of the employees get hurt in the process there there is only one identity for everybody and this is going to be an interesting issue as people find that their personal identity their work identity all of these things are going

to be searchable and TI and tied together and um and so ultimately I am only one person

Xavier Faltot

////// Xavier Faltot is a multimedia producer based in Berlin. For more than twenty years he has moved through radio, image and the web as a media mutant: he started out alongside artist Shu Lea Cheang, founded the Parisian web radio Radiomarais and spent some fifteen years running cultural venues such as la Station and le Consulat, blending art, technology, cinema and poetry. A pioneer of creative uses of the web, he now builds images, voices and custom instruments with artificial intelligence, such as TEXT OPERATOR and La Carte des fuites, designed to write Maison Fluid, his treatise on fluid parenting, out on 25 July 2027.
