my name is Colin Oma I oversee clean technology strategy for and the Green Vision which is in s San Jose California which is in Silicon Valley um and I'm here to kind of talk about what we're doing to try to create the green economy of tomorrow so I I I oversee government policy and so I I try to kind of create policies that kind of spur Innovation

to try to help like the market both um create demand for products and try to encourage people to to be Innovative and to sell their products and then to also help those companies as we're creating that demand make sure those those technologies that are being created create opportunities for people um and so whether it's renewable energy or electric vehicles or um different types of Energy Efficiency products

we see an opportunity for people to create new jobs create and have new opportunities for themselves and their families and so that's what I I bring uh I I I grew up in New York and now I live in in California and I think there's there's a growing awareness that um we can't just keep doing things the way we are doing things and I I think it's

it's a combination of of congestion of different types of um of pollution of of cities you know cities like Los Angeles having pollution that is just unsustainable um and so I I think there there is a realization that is it's coming um I think now with the new Administration that understands that climate change is a problem and and President Obama that believes in clean technology um will

make those changes but we are we're coming late to the to the party and I think that there's uh America can't do it by themselves right now American hasn't been doing its part at all and I think um by having American leadership for the first time um to follow in the in the great leadership of the European Union and Japan in particular um there is an opportunity

to really change the world the next decade I think the bigger concern is that the global economic crisis right now per makes people think they can't afford to make these changes where our argument is that you can't afford not to make the changes and that every day that we wait is going to make it more expensive more difficult to make changes in the future and so I

I think um we have not had kind of a global wakeup call um in the last few years and and my and we really want to make sure that people don't use the current crisis as an excuse not to not to act um and that's why the the leadership from um and the Copenhagen convention next year um is so critical to to moving the entire country along

and making sure that the US is a part of that making sure that China and India are a part of that um but I I think that right now people are more concerned about feeding their family and keeping um keeping their job than and maybe not as tuned in this even though this is the greatest challenge for Our Generation 50 years from now we live in a

world where all of our electrons come from unable sources all of our transportation comes from non fossil fuels we we've increased Global wealth by by trillions of dollars we've reduced poverty because we've been able to better use natural resources and not exploit countries around the world for their for their precious resources and in doing so we've created a a society that is not only environmental environmentally sustainable

economically viable and also socially just um so it really has to break down kind of individualist attitudes but at the same time every individual has to play a role

Xavier Faltot

////// Xavier Faltot is a multimedia producer based in Berlin. For more than twenty years he has moved through radio, image and the web as a media mutant: he started out alongside artist Shu Lea Cheang, founded the Parisian web radio Radiomarais and spent some fifteen years running cultural venues such as la Station and le Consulat, blending art, technology, cinema and poetry. A pioneer of creative uses of the web, he now builds images, voices and custom instruments with artificial intelligence, such as TEXT OPERATOR and La Carte des fuites, designed to write Maison Fluid, his treatise on fluid parenting, out on 25 July 2027.
