I'm Peter cassen I am with the folding at home project at Stanford University so people who own PS3s can then choose to when they're not playing games run folding at home on their PlayStations and the processor in the PS3 is very powerful for games but also for running the sorts of calculations that we do trying to understand both protein folding and a number of diseases that um

are associated with problems and protein folding and the way that this then works is that people download our client they install our software and when they install it and configure it that software will contact our servers we'll get a small chunk of a protein folding simulation download that run it and then send the results back and get another chunk and so what our servers do is essentially

coordinate the assignment of these little chunks and then putting everything back together to get the big picture at the end we'd like to be able to understand diseases and then change the outcome so that people do better I think the driving force behind our project is that many many people out there would like to contribute to science would like to contribute to humanity see that we are

achieving concrete results and want to participate in that and that Beyond just giving over parts of their computer people then create these communities that um help the project grow that develop additional software that facilitates the project and plays a very valuable role in it you know that this is really a global participatory collaborative effort future holds a lot of challenges for us both in terms of diseases

that we now know diseases that are emerging as um both as a result of increased density of people increased contact of people with animals differing interactions of people in the environment and our hope is that by using the combined power of the um the computation of the um donors of the world that we can help with this with this set of challenges people have periodically proclaimed the

end of disease and they have always been wrong

Xavier Faltot

////// Xavier Faltot is a multimedia producer based in Berlin. For more than twenty years he has moved through radio, image and the web as a media mutant: he started out alongside artist Shu Lea Cheang, founded the Parisian web radio Radiomarais and spent some fifteen years running cultural venues such as la Station and le Consulat, blending art, technology, cinema and poetry. A pioneer of creative uses of the web, he now builds images, voices and custom instruments with artificial intelligence, such as TEXT OPERATOR and La Carte des fuites, designed to write Maison Fluid, his treatise on fluid parenting, out on 25 July 2027.
