ENGLISH VERSION

This is a short film I wrote and directed about Alice Guy-Blaché, the first female director of fiction in the history of cinema. Alice Guy was Léon Gaumont’s secretary at the beginning of the last century and she was the first woman to ever direct actors in front of the camera. In 1895, the Lumière brothers introduced to the world the « Cinématographe », the first camera. Léon Gaumont decided to sell this revolutionary new device. Fascinated, Alice asked her boss for permission to use the camera to make her own films. Mr. Gaumont agreed under the condition that she “would be able to keep up with her mail.”

Between the United States and France, this pioneer made more than 1,000 films and her creations are as ingenious as they are feminist. Alice Guy was also the first to direct nonwhite actors in the film « A fool and his money » in 1912. Despite her talent and influence in cinema, many of her films were credited under other names until her death in 1968.

This short-film is a poetic reverie that Alice Guy might have had at the time. Each of the story presented here has been inspired by one of her existing short-films and I invite you to discover some of her films available on YouTube. In 2018 the documentary « Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché » presented the incredible life of the artist narrated by the voice-over of Jodie Foster. The documentary « Alice Guy l’inconnue du 7ème art » is still available on ARTE and the comic book « Alice Guy » written and illustrated by Catel and Bocquet is available in most bookshops in Europe.

I hope you will be as inspired and enchanted by this visionary artist as I was. I invite to dinner all of those who find all the references of her films in this small tribute that I propose to you.
